Helpful Things to Know About the Play

1) This play takes place in England and the actors speak with a variety of British dialects.

2) The story goes back and forth between the present and the past. Don’t worry, the main plot will be very clear.

3) Some of the actors play only one character— those are the characters you will get to know well. Others play several characters— you don’t have to keep track of all of them. To help, we’ve created a character guide:

ACTORS PLAYING ONLY ONE CHARACTER

Steve Fala plays    Christopher Boone   .   Christopher is a 15-year old who lives with his father, Ed, in Swindon, England. Christopher has a unique perspective on the world. He is exceptionally good at math and notices small details. He has a hard time understanding how people share information without words. He gets upset when he gets too much information at one time. He doesn’t like shouting, lying, or being touched. He likes prime numbers, dogs, the color red, and reading murder mystery novels because they are like puzzles. He has a pet rat named Toby.

Steve Fala plays Christopher Boone.

McCambridge Dowd-Whipple plays    Siobhan (pronounced Sha-von)   .   Siobhan is Christopher’s teacher. She likes Christopher, understands how to communicate clearly with him, and is calming to him when he is confused. She encourages him to write a mystery novel about who killed his neighbor’s dog. He trusts her and when he is in difficult situations he imagines what she would tell him to do. As she reads Christopher’s book out loud, Siobhan becomes a narrator for the story.

He loves Christopher and is very proud of his son’s math abilities but he has trouble understanding how Christopher thinks and behaves. He has been a single parent for the last two years, and sometimes gets frustrated and worn out by the demands of raising Christopher without help. This can occasionally make him behave harshly with Christopher.

Samantha Phillips Norton plays    Judy   .   Judy is Christopher’s mom. We first learn about Judy through Christopher’s mystery novel in which he explains how his father told him his mother was dead. He has good memories of her taking him to beach. Later we learn that while Judy loved her son very much, she found it difficult to deal with his behavior.

ACTORS PLAYING MORE THAN ONE CHARACTER

Lydia St. Claire plays    Mrs. Shears   .   Mrs. Shears lives next door to Christopher and his father. The death of her dog, Wellington, makes Christopher decide to solve the mystery of the dog’s murder. Mrs. Shears has been a good friend to Christopher and his Dad after Judy’s death but when we meet her the relationship is strained.   Lydia  also plays:    Mrs. Gascoyne   : the head (like a Principal) at Christopher’s school.     Woman on Train:    a passenger on the train Christopher takes on his journey.     Shopkeeper:    the clerk in a shop that sells traveler guides to London.

Eric Wunsch  plays :     Policeman:    the policeman who discovers Christopher with the dead dog, Wellington. He needs to find out if Christopher killed the dog.     Mr. Thompson’s Brother:    the brother of       one of Christopher’s neighbors. He       doesn’t know anything about the dog being killed and would rather be watching the soccer game on TV than talking to Christopher.     Drunk Two:    a drunk man on the train from Swindon to London who discovers Christopher hiding in the luggage rack.     London Policeman:    a policeman who is called to Mr. Shear’s house in London.
