DOnor spotlight- Bob Rush

Six years ago I went with my son’s family to see the summer kids show performed by the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble at the Alvina Krause Theatre. It was my first time seeing a BTE show and I left there totally amazed. The talented actors, the theatre, the lighting, it was a moving experience. I said to myself that when I retire and have more time I would love to volunteer my time helping them do what they do. As faith would have it I received a call from them asking if I would be interested in being their press photographer! I asked what it would involve and was told that I would have to photograph a dress rehearsal of the current show.

I was very nervous when I went to my first show. Soon I realized that it was like they were doing the show just for me. Sure there were a few other people there but in my mind it was very special. Everything went perfect and now 5 seasons later I look forward to every new performance. The stage, the props, the lighting, the sound, every show just reinforces that Bloomsburg is so lucky to have one of the foremost ensembles in the country. What an honor it is to be part of a group that was presented Outstanding Theatre Award for 2016 by the National Theatre Conference. See, I told you they were good!

The best part of it all is the friends I have made. Such talented people. They never cease to amaze me. They act, direct, set up the sound, the stage. I often thing that most people have no idea what goes into each show. Building sets, costumes, lighting, sound, and did I mention rehearsing!

Over the years I have also been asked to do some other activities. I had the honor of doing the photographs used in the posters for an entire season. I also supplied a time-lapse video of the stage set-up for a Christmas show, the setting up of the trees for tree fest and the TIC cast setting up for their performance. Recently I shot video of a meet and greet with the playwright of an up coming show that will be performed for the first time by BTE.

You always feel good when you volunteer but when you get all the things I receive by being a part of the BTE I can’t help feeling extra good. I hope to do this for many years to come.
